Another Sunny Day
06:56
|
|||
You, you will find a way
to arrive
on another sunny day
I will find
I will find a way
to drop snowflakes in your hand
and rainbows in your hair
you will be by my side
everywhere
You, you’ve got a yearning for love
and you’re all dressed up
and the evening is waiting for you
the skyscrapers know your name
the sidewalks blush
you’re all dressed up in white
when the city’s wearing black
You arrived in the sun
and the birds forgot their song
the cathedrals knelt and prayed
for another sunny day
You could be free
but what can a man see
you could be free
You, you’ve got a history of love
and you’re all mixed up
and temptation is waiting for you
the lamp posts reach down to touch you
the streets signs sigh
you’re all mixed up in white
and the city’s wearing black
You arrived in the sun
and the birds forgot their song
the cathedrals knelt and prayed
for another sunny day
You could be free
but what can a man see
you could be free
what can a man see
You think you’re out of luck
but Eden is open
St Peter wears a mask
he says the rules
are there to be broken
down the street
waiting cars
Future lies ahead
the future’s always near
the past is always present
all the pain and fear
Get it all together
call it rock and roll
if you can see my heart
you can see my very soul
We could be free
what can a man see
we could be free
what can a man see
Another sunny day
you’re dressed in white
and the city’s wearing black
you think you’re out of luck
you’re not

Tell it How You Feel
03:33
|
|
||
Standing on the corner
guitar case in my hand
someone shouting over
“You in a rock’n’roll band?”
I said “Babe have pity,
honey sugar can’t you see
I’m a folk singer baby
In some need of company”
You gotta run run run run run run
before you make a deal
you gotta run run run run run run
and tell it how you feel
A taxi pulls over
asks me if I want a ride
I said I got no money
but I still got my pride
he tells me I’m a Communist
but that’s alright by me
’cause I’m a folk singer standing on the corner
waiting for some good company
You gotta run run run run run run
and then you make a deal
you gotta run run run run run run
and tell it how you feel
Here come my friends
they ask me if I wanna play
rock’n’roll music
the old-fashioned way
I said I got no reason
I got no reason to hide
’cause I love that music
till the day that I die
You gotta run run run run run run
and then you make a deal
you gotta run run run run run run
and tell it how you feel

Meeting under the clocks
walking to a coffee shop
everything’s turning white
Talking about you, and me
sun glancing through street signs
everything’s turning white
Looking for that album I couldn’t find
climbing up to the rooftop bar
everything’s turning white
Putting off saying goodbye
watching everything turn white
You could see it in the tea leaves
and the playing cards
everything’s turning white
Calling up the inevitable
the wind in the trees
the falling leaves
everything’s turning white

Get it Right This Time
06:06
|
|
||
Dreamed I was back in Belfast
drinking on the roof of the writers’ bar
kneeling down before the cathedral
lying on my back making me see stars
Piano player’s getting nervous
you were leaning on a chair
long black dress open to the waist
you were busy curling up your hair
It’s so easy to get distracted
it’s so hard to cross the line
I dream of other places
I’ll get it right this time
get it right this time
The guitarist’s going crazy
he’s drinking vodka by the glass
the record store owner telling stories
ah the time goes by too fast
You took a present from your pocket
with a smile you offered it to me
we were laughing in the evening rain
not two miles from the sea
It’s so easy to get distracted
it’s so hard to cross the line
I dream of other women
I’ll get it right this time
I’ll get it right this time
Took a walk down by the cinema
all along the Dublin Road
where I first met Maria
and the cars were all set to explode
Joined up with a demonstration
heading for the centre of town
banners screaming ‘No’
couldn’t wait for the curtain to come down
It’s so easy to get distracted
it’s so hard to cross the line
I dreamed that night of justice
we’ll get it right this time
we’ll get it right this time
Caught a taxi on the corner
beneath the smashed street light
took off into the distance
of the holy Belfast night
Get it right
get it right this time

Not so Far Away
04:11
|
|
||
Smoking cigarettes on the deck again
don’t know if I can do it
something makes me want to
start again with someone special
something makes me scared
don’t know what I’m afraid of
And the moon shines high over the city
only the hills get in the way
and the orchestra of birds is overwhelming
and you
you’re not so far away
not so far away
Watched the screen tonight till it flickered
never trust computers
they die when you don’t want them to
you never know love until you’re in it
creeps up unawares
it’s unexpected till you’re there
And the dawn breaks high over the horizon like a painting
and the lonesome train bells cry
and the streets themselves are singing while you’re sleeping
and you
you’re not so far away
not so far away
Clapped-out government let us down again
don’t know if I can face it
this daily news survival
I wanna start again with someone special
something makes me scared
don’t know what I’m afraid of
And the morning comes like the postman it’s unpredictable
I long for European sky
and the church bells are silent
’cause no one is really listening
and the icons have tears in their eyes
and you’re so real with your coffee and your cigarettes
and your Mediterranean eyes
come and enclose me
roll over and unfold me
got to realise
you’re not so far away
not so far away

I Miss You
02:50
|
|
||
Like an actor who’s grown up alone
like a poet on the telephone
like a spider without a home
girl I miss you
I built a prison then you burn it down
took my heart that’s buried in the ground
you lift me up and then you spin me round
girl I miss you
I wouldn’t mind
if I drifted into space
I wouldn’t mind
if you lived in my place
I wouldn’t mind
if I could see your face
how I miss you
Like the first time that I was born
I’m impatient for the funeral horn
like Gene Vincent in a field of corn
girl I miss you
You bought a fancy patterned tartan skirt
wrote my name in the original dirt
you got a doctorate in how to flirt
girl I miss you
I wouldn’t mind
I know life can be unkind
I wouldn’t mind
I know I ignored the signs
I wouldn’t mind
but love’s so hard to find
and I miss you
Like an actor
like a poet
like a spider
you know it
I miss you

Take me Back Home
05:21
|
|
||
It’s a hot night in Melbourne
and the Northcote girls are strolling
singing in the street
I caught a breath of Europe there
a tablecloth and a broken chair
the smell of French pancakes
hovering in the heat
never believe I’m out of luck
though this car’s old and the gearstick stuck
but laughter’s so hard to beat
Take me back
take me right back
Another cold night in Dublin
the country girls are drinking
singing in the street
I caught a breath of home back there
with wedding bells and a flash of hair
and the churchyard gravestones
right beneath their feet
I never believed I’d be able to drive
right out of here to the opposite side
there’s so much water in the way
Take me back
take me right back
My best friend just wrote to me
he’s living in the bower of poetry
hitch-hiking his way across the USA
well I found a photograph of us in 79
having the very same teenager time
never knew it would mean so much to me today
and it’s not that I want to do it again
but geography has made a mess of my friends
celebrate time slipping away
Take me back
take me right back
Take me back to where dreams exist
we never met I’d never been kissed
the Ice Queen never got in the way
I never believe we’re out of time
’cause if you lose it all
you still might find
every day is Judgement Day
and the Northcote girls upon the street
and the pancakes cooking in the summertime heat
are Dublin girls whatever you might say
Take me back
take me right back
Take me home
I really wanna go

Shine a Light
03:16
|
|
||
In the cold grey morning
through the long dark night
the sun breaks the clouds
just like candlelight
Wherever I may wander
wherever you may roam
there’ll always be a place for you
you can always call this home
Shine a light
whatever way you go
I’m alright
I wanted you to know
Like butterflies and columbines
honeybees and crows
we’re walking in this world alone
as everybody knows
Governments may come
and governments may go
but there’s only one government
that you really want to know
Shine a light
whatever way you go
I’m alright
just wanted you to know
And if there’s something that you want to be
take this goodbye to set you free
Throw your arms around me
kiss me gently on the cheek
don’t look back to see me wave
until you’re safely out of reach
Shine a light
whatever way you go
I’m alright
just wanted you to know
Shine a light
whatever way you can
shine a light
you’ve grown up to be a man
Shine a light
whatever way you go
I’m alright
I just wanted you to know
